Toddler Room
A time for investigating and exploring for children aged two to three years
Exploring the Toddler room
Our Toddler Room caters for children aged 2-3 years old.
In the Toddler Room we focus on promoting independence and continuing to support each child to form friendships and improve their social skills.
Play time is still a huge part of their day, however we start to introduce small focused group time activities (Scaffolding learning) such as story time, music and movement, flashcards etc. These group times are an adult led teaching and learning opportunity, that the children really enjoy.
Helping with your child's development
In the Toddler Room your child will receive their '2 Year Check' appointment, this is completed by your child's Health Visitor. Your child's keyworker will complete and provide a report and information ready for your child's '2 Year Check.'
Staff in the Toddler Room work very closely with parents providing tips and advice around communication, language, social skills, healthy eating, toilet training and promoting positive behaviour.
We provide suitable activities including role play, action songs, story time, sand, water and messy play and expressive art and design and much more. All of our activities are designed to encourage children to express their individual personalities.
We follow 'In the moment planning' and 'scaffolding learning' within the Toddler Room. 'In the moment planning' enables us to follow the children's interest, extend and add different learning opportunities to their play. 'Scaffolding learning' enables us to work closely with the children with adult led activities to ensure that we are reaching the child's individual next steps. For more information regarding to learning please see 'The Learning Experiences' Page.
Sleep Time
Here at St. Andrews sleep safety is paramount to the care that we provide, and we have a policy that is in place to ensure the safety of all children.
Our policy follows the advice set out by Lullaby Trust to minimise the risk of Sudden Infant Death.
All staff that are caring for sleeping children have first aid training and we visually monitor sleeping children’s breathing every 5 minutes for children under 12 months old and children over the age of 1 years are monitored every 10 minutes. A staff member is always supervising children who are sleeping. (Please feel free to request to read our Sleep Policy.)
We follow the 'ABCs' of safer sleep which are as follows:
Alone – we ensure that the children’s sleep area is clear on clutter such as soft toys and excess blankets however, we do understand that some children have comforters and they be used when required.
Back – when putting children down for a sleep they are always placed on their backs. If a child can roll from back to front confidently on their own, they will be left to find their own position.
Cot – we have cots available for our younger children however, for our older children we have mattress beds. Each child will have their own clean, individual sheet and blanket which is changed every week.
