Special Additional Needs and Learning Difficulties

How we support children with Special additional needs and learning differences?

Here at St Andrews Day Nursery we ensure that every child is treated as an individual and focus on how we can support each and every child.

At our Nursery we have a SENCO (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator) who oversees the day to day operation of the 'SEN policy.' The SENCO will work with our Nursery practitioners to support children to continue to progress with their development.

'

The SENCO will work with outside professionals such as speech and language, the Integrated Disability Service, Health visitors etc to ensure that the correct level of support is provided for the individual.

The SENCO works closely with parents/carers to ensure that we are providing the best support we can. This is something that we feel is very important at St Andrews Nursery.

What Does Ofsted Have To Say About Our SENCO?

"The support for children with SEND is exemplary. The special educational needs and disabilities coordinator works closely with parents, professionals and staff to ensure that children receive tailored support to make the progress they are capable of. The guidance given to staff is highly comprehensive and enables them to fully ensure the provision is inclusive for children. This practice is worthy of dissemination. As a result, children with SEND develop exceedingly well from their starting points. "

Makaton

Makaton is a visual way to develop communication skills. It is a language that uses signs and to enable to communicate.

Jess has completed a Level 1 and Level 2 Makaton course. Jess works hard on teaching Makaton across the Nursery.

The children learn Makaton during song time and group times. Jess has a sign of the week which the children and staff focus on learning.

Jess also uploads a new video each week onto our Facebook page to help teach parents/carers.
