Awe and Wonder

Cultural Capital/ Awe and Wonder

We acknowledge and understand children come to our nursery with various experiences, our role as nursery practitioners is to enrich and extend the children's learning and knowledge.

Chinese New Year

We encourage the children to take part in Chinese New Year. We provide creative activities and experiences for the children to take part in. Our wonderful chef cooks cultural foods throughout the day. The children take part in role play using a variety of different resources. The children are able to dress up in cultural clothing etc. During group times we have adult led learning discussions relating to Chinese New Year to help the children understand this celebration.

Growing and New Life

We encourage the children to be involved with caring for our vegetables and fruit within our growing area. Once the vegetables and fruit are ready the children are able to take them to our nursery chef, who uses the ingredients to cook our yummy home made dinners.

Every year we take part in a hatching programme. We have chick/duck eggs that arrive in an incubator. The children are provided with an unique learning experience watching the eggs hatch and the animals grow each day. This is an experience that the children, parents, siblings and staff all really enjoy.

 Easter

Every year we host an special Easter Bonnet Parade at the nursery, which we invite parents and family along to. This involves the parents getting creative with their child by helping and supporting them to make their own bonnet. The children are then able to proudly take part in a parade around the nursery whilst wearing their bonnets.
All of the bonnets are entered into our yearly competition.

We take part in several activities on this day relating to Easter such as our very popular Easter egg hunt in our beautiful garden area for the children and their families to take part in. We have an fun Easter party which involves lots of dancing and yummy party food!

We have a range of crafts and learning experiences relating to Easter throughout the week. We update parents with the activities that their child has taken part in by our weekly learning post on Tapestry.

' The Easter Celebration were fantastic and gave me chance to see what a special place St Andrews really is.'

World Book Day

We have a dress up day, where the children and staff are able to dress up as their favourite book character. We encourage the children to bring in their favourite book for us to read with them and their friends. Our activities throughout this day are based around stories for the children to explore and take part in.

Harvest

Throughout summer and autumn the children enjoy taking part in growing and caring for the fruit and vegetables in our growing area. We have adult led learning discussions about Harvest Festival. The children pick the fruit and vegetables, which are then prepared in our kitchen by our on site nursery chef for our home made meals. We encourage children to collect and bring food to donate to our local community.  We visit our local church for a Harvest Service, parents/carers are invited along for this event.

Halloween

The children help to decorate their base rooms with Halloween resources and crafts that they have made themselves.

We have a fun, spooky Halloween party at nursery. The children and staff are invited to come to nursery in their Halloween costumes. We organise creative learning activities throughout the day. During our party we have Halloween party games and tasty party food!

We host an annual Halloween party at our local village hall. This is an event that the children and their families really enjoy!

The children are involved in growing their own pumpkins which our nursery chef turns into delicious pumpkin soup.

All of the three rooms take part in our Halloween pumpkin competition. Each room takes part in carving and creating their pumpkin. The children and staff get very creative. Parents and family are then asked to vote for the winning pumpkin.

Christmas

We decorate the rooms into a festive environment and our onsite nursery chef cooks us a yummy home made Christmas dinner, which the children really enjoy.

We organise a Christmas party at nursery, we invite the children to come into nursery in their party clothing. The children have a fun day taking part in Christmas activities and party games.

We hold a magical Christmas concert at our local village hall, inviting all families from our nursery to attend. This is followed by a yummy Christmas treat: refreshments and mince pies (mulled wine as a special treat for the parents.)

And of course it would not be Christmas without a visit from 'you know who'... Yes Santa and his helpers visit us in a magical grotto complete with sparkly reindeer, where each child receives a small treat.

Celebrations and Festivals

Above are just some of the celebrations and festivals that we take part in over the year. We take part in so many other celebrations and events such as Children's Mental Health Day, Diwali, Ramadan, Mothers Day, Fathers Day etc. We try and take part in as many events as we can, if parents have any more suggestions for celebrations or events then we are always open for suggestions.

It is important that children have a good knowledge and understanding of the world, which is why we include and celebrate festivals from all cultures.

'Excellent . I am very pleased with my daughters development at St Andrews nursery . Every week it’s a new topic and staff is very friendly and cooperative . I will definitely recommend this nursery to my family and friends . Thank you to all the staff.'

'Santa was absolutely wonderful with the children. He asked just the right type and number of questions and filled my child with Awe.'

Our Nursery Outings

We endeavour to take the children on small local outings throughout the year to explore the wider environment. This can include trips to the park, village hall and the local church in Shilton.

We visit the Church for many celebrations over the year such as Easter, Harvest and Christmas. We welcome  parents along for this too, so they can experience this with event with their child.

 Charity Events

We take part in supporting various charity events throughout the year which includes Children in need, Red nose day, Princess and Pirates Day (supporting disabled children). We also work closely with our parents in supporting charities that are close to their and their families heart! We have a 'Charity and Events Co-ordinator' who organises different activities throughout the Nursery for the children, staff and parents to take part in.
