Looking after your baby with a high level of care:

In our Baby Room we cater for children from the age of 8 months to 2 years old. We aim to provide a home from home experience that is both nurturing and caring for both your child and parents.

Our Baby Room environment is open plan and spacious which is easily adaptable according to the needs of the children that attend at the time. Sometimes when we  have a mixture of different ages in the room we create a baby sanction area, this is to enable our younger babies to have the safe environment that they require.

In the room we provide wonderful learning opportunities enabling the children to  explore the world around them using their senses. The Baby Room have their own individual large garden which is separate from both the Toddler Room and the Preschool. The garden is spacious for our babies to explore and develop their gross motor skills safely. We provide the same learning experiences outside as well as inside by planning different activities according to the children’s interests.

In the Baby Room we pride ourselves on the relationships we build with both children and parents. We understand that the transition into nursery life can come with its challenges and can be a very anxious time for new starters. It is a very big decision to bring your child to nursery and with all of this in mind we plan carefully to ensure the smoothest transition possible.

Offering a variety of stimulating activities in our Baby Room:

In the Baby Room we focus on providing a warm and welcoming environment that is stimulating to the age range of our children. We do this by providing a wide variety of activities including Messy Play, Small world models such as farms and jungle animals, musical activities and a wide range of construction toys. Our topic focus on the child’s interests and the children are encouraged to explore independently with support from staff.

We ensure all of the babies in our care are progressing and developing in a happy and comfortable environment.

How we Support your child with their Learning and Development:

To observe the children's learning and development we have an online learning journal called 'Tapestry.' Staff will complete learning observations on each child during their time at nursery, these observations will then be uploaded onto your child's learning journal along with images and videos for parents/carers to view. Please see 'Our Learning Experiences' section on our website for more information on what tapestry is and how we use it here at St Andrews Day Nursery.

In the Baby Room the staff work very closely with parents/carers to provide different tips and advice around communication, language skills, social skills, healthy eating, weaning and promoting positive behaviour.

We provide suitable activities including role play, action songs, story time, sand, water and messy play and expressive art and design and much more. All of our activities are designed to encourage children to express their individual personalities and explore.

We follow 'In the moment planning' and 'scaffolding learning' within the Baby Room. 'In the moment planning' enables us to follow the children's interest whilst extending on learning opportunities throughout their play. 'Scaffolding learning' allows children to learn whilst receiving support and guidance from their peers or keyworker.

For more information regarding your child's learning and development please take a look at 'Our Learning Experiences' Page on our website. If you do have any more questions then please contact a staff member to discuss this.

Support for young children who are teething:

Teething can be a very difficult time for both your little one and for parents.

Sleep Time:

Here at St. Andrews sleep safety is paramount to the care that we provide, and we have a policy that is in place to ensure the safety of all children.

Our policy follows the advice set out by Lullaby Trust to minimise the risk of Sudden Infant Death.

All staff that are caring for sleeping children have first aid training and we visually monitor sleeping children’s breathing every 5 minutes for children under 12 months old and children over the age of 1 years are monitored every 10 minutes. A staff member is always supervising children who are sleeping. (Please feel free to request to read our Sleep Policy.)

We follow the 'ABCs' of safer sleep which are as follows:

Alone – we ensure that the children’s sleep area is clear on clutter such as soft toys and excess blankets however, we do understand that some children have comforters and they be used when required.

Back – when putting children down for a sleep they are always placed on their backs. If a child can roll from back to front confidently on their own, they will be left to find their own position.

Cot – we have cots available for our younger children however, for our older children we have mattress beds. Each child will have their own clean, individual sheet and blanket which is changed every week.
